JAKARTA, Indonesia, Nov. 14, 2008 (Press Release) - As the fight against global warming continues, APP is working hard to lead by example and show the world that profit generation and environmental sustainability can indeed go hand in hand. To this end Indah Kiat Serang, an APP mill in the West of Java Island, is currently installing a new wastewater treatment system that would not only enhance its environmental performance but allow the mill to increase its production capacity, proving that reductions in emissions can help economic growth.
The project is called the "Combined Waste Water Treatment System"and will result in two different treatment systems; the aerobic system, which is commonly used in almost all industries worldwide, and the advanced anaerobic system, which reduces both emissions and energy consumption. Indah Kiat Serang will be one of the first paper mills in Indonesia to apply this advanced technology. The Indah Kiat Serang mill was specifically selected to be the first APP mill to apply this advanced technology for the treatment of wastewater as it manufactures recycled board grade products, which are used for packaging goods. The production process uses a significant amount of post consumer waste paper and thus the mill's liquid emission contains a relatively higher amount of pollutant when compared to other mills which do not produce recycled products.
The emissions rate of the Indah Kiat Serang mill has always been in accordance with the national regulation, but with this new wastewater treatment system, emission levels could reach an all new low. The basic principal behind the new system is the addition of the anaerobic wastewater treatment facility to the conventional aerobic one. The anaerobic treatment will serve as a pre-treatment to significantly reduce the amount of pollutant in the wastewater, before it enters the aerobic treatment. The aerobic system will then enhance the quality of the wastewater even more before it is either released or recycled back into the production line.
The combined wastewater treatment system will not only bring about large improvement in the quality of the water effluent, but also reduce green house gas production and replace it with energy rich biogas, which the mill will capture and use to reduce energy consumption in the production process. In addition to this, the combined system itself requires less energy to operate and produces a lot less bio sludge than the conventional single system. The little sludge it produces has a high market value and can be sold or transferred to other wastewater treatment facilities to treat more wastewater and or be used as fertilizer for industrial plantations.
APP is committed to reducing the emission of all its mills. The Indah Kiat Serang example is already being followed by another APP Mill in East Java that also produces board grade products, as APP continues to focus on improving its environmentally sustainable business practices. |
